Start at Sheffield, then choose well

On the timetable for Tuesday 15 September 2026, the 09:12 from Barnsley reached Sheffield at 09:35, caught a train at 09:56 to Tamworth, and made an eight-minute change there to reach Rugby at 11:26. Other departures took a different second leg through Birmingham or, oddly, headed west through Stockport, and paid for it in time.

The Stockport route adds over half an hour. The 09:42 from Barnsley goes via Meadowhall and Stockport and gets to Rugby at 12:33, more than an hour after the 09:12 arrives. If a journey planner shows Stockport, look for a Sheffield and Tamworth option nearby.

On the 20:00, the wait at Sheffield is 27 minutes, which is why it takes longer than the daytime version. Check live times on National Rail Enquiries on the day.

Driving from Barnsley

Both planners send you onto the M1 near Barnsley and south for almost the whole trip. They split at the end, one leaving for the A426 and the other at Junction 18 for the A428, and came out at 95 and 101 miles.

Why stay rather than go back

A round trip of four and a half hours or more by train rarely makes sense for a day. From Barnsley, a night or a week in Rugby tends to suit contract jobs locally or visits to Rugby School.
