There is only one realistic way from Chelmsford to Rugby by rail, and it goes through the middle of London. You arrive at Liverpool Street, take the Underground to Euston and catch a train north from there. Door to door on the rails that means a little over two hours, while the road trip is about 109 miles on the M25 and M1.

How the London crossing works

On the timetable for Tuesday 15 September 2026, a typical morning journey leaves Chelmsford at 09:28, reaches Liverpool Street at 10:03 and allows 15 minutes on the Underground to Euston. The Rugby train leaves Euston at 10:46 and arrives at 11:42, 2 hours 14 minutes after you set off.

Leaves Chelmsford Train from Euston Arrives Rugby Journey
08:25 09:46 10:42 2 h 17 min
08:43 10:16 11:14 2 h 31 min

17:25 18:46 19:42 2 h 17 min
19:55 21:29 22:27 2 h 32 min
20:33 22:03 23:08 2 h 35 min

A later start from Chelmsford costs 14 minutes more. The 08:43 arrives at Euston just after one Rugby train has gone and waits for the next, so it takes 2 hours 31 minutes. The 08:25 before it takes 2 hours 17.

The Underground transfer is timed by the journey planner, not guaranteed. With luggage or at busy times, give yourself more than the minimum and check National Rail Enquiries before you go.

Driving from Chelmsford

Two route planners agreed on about 109 miles from central Chelmsford. Both leave town towards the M25, follow it round the north of London and turn north onto the M1, coming off at Junction 18 for the A428 into Rugby. Because so much of it depends on the M25, we won’t guess at a journey time.

At the hotel, cars go in the small yard behind the building. It has room for six, fills in arrival order and has CCTV, and if it is full, the kerb on Railway Terrace is free overnight (18:00 to 08:00).

Why make it an overnight trip

More than four hours of travel there and back makes a day trip from Essex to Rugby hard work. Most people who come from Chelmsford stay for a reason that needs more than an afternoon: a wedding in Warwickshire, a show at Stoneleigh Park, or a spell of work that suits our longer stays.

What’s at our end

A kitchenette in each of the 16 rooms, free washing machines and dryers on the first floor, and weekly housekeeping on bookings of seven nights or more. Browse the rooms and check the guest guide and hotel policies for arrival and cancellation.
