Wolverhampton sits about 39 miles from Rugby in a straight line, on the far side of Birmingham. Most trains between the two involve a change, though not all of them, and the ones that run straight through leave later in the day than you might expect.

Wolverhampton to Apart Hotel Rugby: the essentials

Morning trains
1 hour 6 to 1 hour 17 minutes, changing at Coventry or Birmingham New Street.
Direct trains
We found them in the evening, at 18:45, 21:45 and 22:45 on a weekday.
Fastest we saw
56 minutes, on the 21:37 with a five-minute change at Stafford.
Last train
22:45, arriving in Rugby at 23:43.
By road
The M6 for most of the way, then off at Junction 1 for Rugby.

Where the direct trains are hiding

We checked four stretches of the timetable for Tuesday 15 September 2026: morning, early evening, mid-evening and late. None of the morning departures between 07:58 and 09:45 ran direct. In the evening, three did.

Leaves Wolverhampton Change at Arrives Rugby Journey
07:58 Birmingham New Street 09:15 1 h 17 min
08:39 Coventry 09:45 1 h 6 min
08:45 Birmingham New Street 09:55 1 h 10 min
18:45 Direct 19:55 1 h 10 min
21:37 Stafford 22:33 56 min
21:45 Direct 22:50 1 h 5 min
22:45 Direct 23:43 58 min

The 08:39 changes at Coventry, and that is no bad thing. It reaches Coventry at 09:23 and the Rugby train goes at 09:35. At 1 hour 6 minutes it was the quickest morning option we checked, beating both of the trains that change at Birmingham New Street.

Connections and direct services move when timetables change. Confirm your train on National Rail Enquiries, especially the Stafford connection, which leaves only five minutes to change platforms.

Driving from Wolverhampton

Both route planners we used put almost the whole drive on the M6, and one names the exit as Junction 1, signed for Rugby and Lutterworth. They disagreed by several miles on how to get from central Wolverhampton onto the motorway, so we give the straight-line distance instead: about 39 miles.

Six parking spaces at the back of our building are shared by guests on a first-come, first-served basis, with CCTV watching them. Railway Terrace, right outside, lets you park free overnight from 18:00 to 08:00.

Reasons to stay over rather than head back

  • Evening plans in Rugby that finish after the 22:45 has left in the other direction.
  • A run of early starts on engineering or site work in the area, like the placements described on our page for engineers at MIRA Technology Park.
  • A move to Rugby that leaves a gap between homes. Our house move guide covers longer bookings.

Arriving on the late train

Catch the 22:45 and you will walk in shortly before midnight. That works fine here: the door opens with a keypad code, and the room has its own kitchenette and a kettle for a late cup of tea. Have a look at the rooms, and at our guest guide and hotel policies for everything from pets to cancellation.

Timetable details for Wolverhampton come from traintimes.org.uk for Tuesday 15 September 2026, across four time windows, and Trainline likewise lists only a small number of direct services a day on this route. The 39 miles is a straight-line measurement. OSRM and Valhalla both routed via the M6 but reported different mileages, so road mileage is left out. Checked on 10 September 2026.
