Stoke-on-Trent has something most cities on this list don’t: direct trains to Rugby that take only 40 minutes. They don’t run every hour, though, and the alternatives take roughly twice as long, so it pays to know when the direct ones leave.

Stoke-on-Trent to Apart Hotel Rugby: key points

Direct trains
40 to 46 minutes. We found them at 09:53, 17:53, 18:53, 19:53 and 22:53 on a weekday.
Otherwise
1 hour 16 to 1 hour 29 minutes, changing at Nuneaton or Stafford.
Last train
22:53, direct, arriving in Rugby at 23:38.
By road
About 75 miles, mostly on the M6.
In Rugby
Ten minutes on foot from the station to our building.

When the direct trains run

The timetable for Tuesday 15 September 2026 shows direct Stoke to Rugby services dotted through the day rather than on a fixed hourly pattern. In the morning window we checked, from 07:57 to 09:57, only the 09:53 ran direct. In the evening there were several more.

Leaves Stoke Route Arrives Rugby Journey
07:57 Change at Stafford 09:26 1 h 29 min
08:10 Change at Nuneaton 09:26 1 h 16 min
09:53 Direct 10:33 40 min
17:53 Direct 18:33 40 min
18:53 Direct 19:33 40 min
22:09 Change at Stafford 23:28 1 h 19 min
22:53 Direct 23:38 45 min

Leaving at 07:57 or at 08:10 gets you to Rugby at the same moment, 09:26. The later one, via Nuneaton, buys you 13 extra minutes at home, but it then sits at Nuneaton for 29 minutes before the Rugby train pulls out. If you can wait until mid-morning, the 09:53 does the whole trip in 40.

Direct services are often the first thing to shift when timetables are revised. Check the day’s trains on National Rail Enquiries before you plan around one.

Driving from Stoke-on-Trent

Our two route planners both give about 75 miles from central Stoke. You leave the city on the A500, pick up the M6 and stay with the motorway until Junction 1, where you turn off for Rugby and Lutterworth.

Behind our building there are six parking spaces for guests, used on a first-come, first-served basis and covered by CCTV. Railway Terrace outside is free to park on overnight, between 18:00 and 08:00.

Why stay in Rugby rather than travel back

  • An evening in Rugby that runs late, when you would rather not work out the trains home at the end of it.
  • Graduation or visit days in Coventry and Warwick, with Rugby as a quieter base. Our graduation guide goes into that.
  • Clinical placements at the Hospital of St Cross, less than two miles from our door. See our page for locum doctors.
