Watford Junction sits on the West Coast Main Line, so unlike most places this far from Rugby, it has direct trains. The fastest take 38 to 43 minutes. The catch is that not every direct train is fast: some take well over an hour on the same tracks, and on one morning service it was quicker to get off halfway and change.

Two kinds of direct train

On the timetable for Tuesday 15 September 2026, the departures at 31 minutes past each hour ran straight to Rugby in 43 minutes, from the morning to the evening. A few minutes later, at 38 minutes past, another train also runs through to Rugby, but it takes much longer. Changing at Milton Keynes Central can beat it.

Leaves Watford Junction Route Arrives Rugby Journey
08:31 Direct 09:14 43 min
08:38 Direct, slower service 10:02 1 h 24 min
08:38 Change at Milton Keynes Central 09:42 1 h 4 min
17:31 Direct 18:14 43 min
21:25 Direct 22:03 38 min
22:49 Direct 23:58 1 h 9 min

On the 08:38, getting off early gets you there sooner. Stay on and you reach Rugby at 10:02. Step off at Milton Keynes Central at 09:07, take the 09:19, and you are in Rugby at 09:42, twenty minutes ahead of the train you just left.

After the 22:49, a direct train at 23:17 still runs but arrives at 00:32. Check the day’s timetable on National Rail Enquiries, since the fast and slow services are easy to mix up on a departure board.

Driving from Watford

Both route planners agree on about 70 miles from central Watford, and the route could hardly be simpler: onto the M1 and north all the way to Junction 18, then the A428 west into Rugby.

Guests who drive can use six spaces in our yard at the back, taken as people arrive and covered by CCTV. Out on Railway Terrace, nobody charges for parking between 18:00 and 08:00.

Close enough for a day, sometimes worth a night

With a 43-minute direct train, plenty of trips from Watford are day trips. Where a room helps is when the day runs long or repeats: a week of contract work in Rugby, a late wedding reception, or a family visit where nobody wants to watch the clock.

A room set up for more than one night

14 of our 16 rooms have a kitchenette, which matters more on a week of work than on a single night. The first-floor laundry costs guests nothing, and bookings of seven nights or longer get a clean once a week. Room types and photos: see the rooms. Check-in, parking and pet rules: guest guide and hotel policies.

How we got these numbers, on 10 September 2026: we searched traintimes.org.uk with Watford Junction as the start and Tuesday 15 September 2026 as the travel date, which covered both the direct trains and the Milton Keynes Central change. Trainline’s route page was used only to confirm that direct services run. The roughly 70-mile M1 drive is where the OSRM and Valhalla route planners agreed.
