Three railway routes, none of them simple
On the timetable for Tuesday 15 September 2026, journey planners offered three quite different ways from Luton to Rugby, all taking about two hours.
- North via Bedford, then across to Bletchley, a short hop to Milton Keynes Central and a train up to Rugby.
- South via St Albans, with a walk from St Albans City to St Albans Abbey station, the branch line to Watford Junction and a train north from there.
- Through London: into St Pancras, the Underground to Euston, then back out on a Rugby train.
| Leaves Luton | Route | Arrives Rugby | Journey |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08:13 | St Albans, Watford Junction | 10:14 | 2 h 1 min |
| 08:27 | St Pancras, Euston | 10:42 | 2 h 15 min |
| 08:50 | Bedford, Bletchley, Milton Keynes | 10:45 | 1 h 55 min |
| 21:40 | Kettering, Leicester, Nuneaton | 23:38 | 1 h 58 min |
| 22:10 | Bedford, Bletchley, Milton Keynes | 00:32 | 2 h 22 min |
The St Albans route includes a walk between stations. The 08:13 gets to St Albans City at 08:27, and the branch-line train leaves St Albans Abbey at 09:08. The timetable routes you on foot between the two, so allow for carrying luggage across town.
Late in the evening the options thin out and change route. Check each leg on National Rail Enquiries before you rely on it.
Flying into Luton Airport
If you are landing at London Luton Airport, the trains to Rugby leave from Luton Airport Parkway and follow the same three patterns. On that Tuesday they took between 1 hour 58 minutes and 2 hours 12 minutes, and the 21:37 from the Parkway reached Rugby at 23:38. By road, both route planners put the airport about 57 miles from our building.
A late landing is where self check-in helps. There is no desk to reach before it shuts: your door code is the last four digits of your reservation number, so a delayed flight doesn’t cost you the room.
Driving from Luton
The two planners we checked agree on about 53 miles from central Luton, almost all of it on the M1. Come off at Junction 18, signed for Rugby and the rail freight terminal, and follow the A428 west into town.
There is no charge to park when you get here. Our small car park takes six cars, fills in the order guests arrive and is covered by cameras, and from six in the evening until eight the next morning you can also use the kerb on Railway Terrace for free.
Staying in Rugby after the journey
If your plans after landing are in the Midlands rather than London, Rugby puts you on the West Coast Main Line with a room to settle into. 14 of our 16 rooms have a kitchenette, laundry is free on the first floor, and stays of a week or more include housekeeping.
